Midwifery is, at its core, the ability to “be with woman”. It is being fully present, listening deeply, laughing joyously, and holding sacred space for a woman to walk the labyrinth that will take her to her center, to motherhood.

Midwifery

As with a labyrinth, pregnancy and birth circles around and winds back and forth on itself, but there is only one path in and one path out. Midwifery is the ability to guide a woman through that journey, while understanding it is her journey to make.

We believe deeply in a woman’s ability to birth, and we believe that by encouraging, educating and empowering our clients, we are able to help them strengthen the trust they have in their own bodies.

Licensed midwives specialize in healthy moms having healthy babies. We don’t take care of sick mamas or babies. Some women do need a doctor, or a hospital, and part of our job is to identify those women and help them find high quality medical care.

Preconception Counseling

It is a big decision to start planning for a pregnancy, and more research comes out every day proving that the health and wellbeing of the mother before conception has a direct effect on the health of your future baby. Many women do not realize they are pregnant until well after the critical period of fetal development in the first trimester. Preconception care allows us time to address and change any necessary issues, reducing the risk to mothers and babies. A leisurely hour long office visit with time to discuss how to optimize your health and lifestyle before conception is the best time to meet your midwife.

A preconception visit is a great first step to a conscious conception and a healthy pregnancy.

A preconception counseling session allows us time to:

> Perform a physical assessment and to discuss any recommended lab testing, such as progesterone, folic acid, Vit D, test for anemia.

> Obtain a Pap smear, if indicated

> Assess your personal health by reviewing your pregnancy history, medical history, use of medications, genetic and family history and nutritional assessment with a personal diet review

> Discuss ways to become healthier – review of healthy weight, healthy diet, stress relief, environmental factors, exercise & fitness, fertility awareness

> Advise if any changes are needed – folic acid supplementation, vitamins, herbs, smoking or drinking cessation

Services

At Embrace Midwifery Care & Birth Center, we are passionate about educating, encouraging and empowering parents to find the path that is right for them and their baby.

We carefully monitor the progress of your pregnancy and labor, and recommend appropriate care if complications arise. All parents should have informed choice, not just informed consent. We believe our job is to provide excellent, unbiased information and resources and trust that no one wants better for your baby than you! We offer safe, gentle, compassionate and evidence based care to mothers and their partners who are seeking an alternative to the medical model of care during pregnancy and birth.

Our global care fee includes prenatal, labor, birth, postpartum care and newborn assessment and care (up to 6 weeks of life for newborns). The services included in your fees are:

  • Midwife, RN birth assistant and doula intern, if desired

  • Regular reviews of your food choices and supplements, with simple advice to tweak your diet and maximize your nutrition

  • Full prenatal care, including once monthly visits until 28 weeks, then twice weekly until 36 weeks and then weekly until birth. Visits will be done at our Birth Center, in one of our comfortable and friendly exam rooms.

  • Labor and birth in one of our beautiful new birth suites

  • Newborn exam on the bed next to you a few hours after the birth, and well newborn care for the first 6 weeks of life.  And breastfeeding support!  No birth is complete until we have a babe on the breast.

  •  Suturing, if needed, for 1st and 2nd degree tears

  • 24 hour availability of midwife for labor, birth or emergency situations

  • After the birth, care is still important!  First postpartum visit at 24-72 hours will be done in your home, and includes your baby’s Newborn Metabolic Screening.  Additional office visits at 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks and a final postpartum check up at 6-8 weeks after birth.

  • E-mail, text and phone communication, as needed

  • We’ll complete FMLA or other employment forms necessary for maternity leave

  • Heel stick for the Newborn Metabolic Screening, as required per state guidelines

  • Newborn Vitamin K injection and eye medication prophylaxis, if you chose

  • Ordering of the standard prenatal lab tests, and any needed or desired ultrasounds (We never require an ultrasound unless there is a medical concern)

  • In the case of an Rh-negative mother, cord blood lab work to determine the baby’s blood type is included.

Choosing a care provider during this special time is one of the most important decisions you’ll make and will affect not only your pregnancy, birth and baby, but your life.

You will never forget your birth.

“If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.”
